I have a Sony brand receiver that is under 5 year warranty. It had some service bulletins to repair manufacturing defects. Sony's website referred me to MJ and I took the receiver there the week of Thanksgiving. Compared to previous places I tried to take it, they were very friendly. They copied my proof of purchase and service bulletin details and told me to expect a call the following Monday with details. Unfortunately, that's where the good service ended.

Two weeks later I stopped in and was told "it was on the bench" and that they couldn't reproduce the problem (even though I had service bulletins with serial number ranges showing this device was covered, and saw the problems myself.) Some time later I stopped in to learn that they had ordered the parts (though failed to inform me.)

Eventually I got a voicemail saying they couldn't get the parts so it needed to be shipped back to Sony. I called and spoke to someone who didn't seem to know any details. Mike, the person who left the message, wasn't in the two times I called. I assumed they were informing me that they were shipping it back to Sony for repair or replacement.

Three weeks later I stopped in to check and was told that they hadn't shipped it in because "it always takes 2-3 weeks when a repair shop ships stuff in," whereas it would be quicker if I did it. I said I didn't mind waiting, and would like them to ship it as I had no boxes that large. The person I spoke with agreed to take care of it.

Some three weeks later, I stopped in again. The guy said it needed to be shipped in, and then said that it had been shipped in, but that he didn't know the status so would have Mike call me. I just got off the phone with Mike who informed me that they don't ship equipment in for repair anymore because they don't want the responsibility of UPS losing it. He gave me a story about having shipped a TV in the past that got lost and they had to cover it for the customer or something (don't know why they didn't insure such a shipment.)

So in the end, even though they are a Sony recommended, Sony certified service center, some three months and numerous visits have gotten me no closer to a repair. Apparently, if the item is under warranty, they aren't allowed to buy the part from anyone but Sony and still get paid for it. And if can't get the part from Sony, they're not going to facilitate the repair any further, end of story. So now I have to find a box to pack it safely, process a service request and ship it off to Sony myself. Even if Sony's policies limit what service providers can do, the whole experience has been a disaster in terms of communication and customer service.

Maybe if you have a device outside of warranty and it's too expensive to replace it, it might be worth taking it here. But most electronics these days are cheaper to simply replace.

Please Please beware of this organization. I cannot in good faith recommend this store to do any repair work. Why? They are very untruthful to the customer. They do not verify the quality of their work. And finally when they are questioned about their commitments they lie to cover themselves.

It is best to go elsewhere. If you do business with it's best to record the conversation. There are several other reputable electronic stores out there.
